Oakhurst Firehouse Holds Food Drive To Extinguish Hunger

December 10, 2019

Not only do the members of Oakhurst (NJ) Independent Hose Company No. 1 put their lives on the line for their community, they also volunteer their time to help their neighbors in need. This November, the department held its first annual “Extinguish Hunger” Thanksgiving food drive with the Wanamassa Fire Company and Wayside Fire/Rescue.

At the end of the holiday drive, more than 1,300 lbs of non-perishable food had been collected — that’s enough to provide more than 1,000 meals for people facing hunger. Our partners from Lowy’s Moving Service, a Wheaton agent, helped out by providing boxes for the collection. The fire department personally delivered all of the donations to Fulfill.

More than 103,000 people in Monmouth and Ocean Counties are facing hunger, including 1 in 8 children. A big thank you to those at Oakhurst Firehouse, Wanamassa Fire Company and Wayside Fire/Rescue for coming together and hosting the event. We’d also like to thank those at Lowy’s Moving Service for their help! We hope we can work together to support our community again soon!
