Northstar Moving Company Sends Hunger Packing For The 7th Year In A Row!

July 24, 2019

Last month, Northstar Moving Company organized the 7th annual Let's Send Hunger Packing Food Drive!

From June 3-14, Northstar Moving encouraged people to drop off non-perishable food at Northstar Moving Company's headquarters and other locations in Los Angeles. Nearly 900 lbs. of food was collected and delivered to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. That's enough to provide 740 meals!

“I am so proud of and inspired by our team and the community,” said NorthStar Moving Co-Founder, Laura McHolm. “We had a fantastic group of individuals and organizations support us this year, including Groundwork Coffee. We are so grateful for their support and to everyone who helped make a difference in the lives of hungry children throughout the LA region. Please remember, this is something all of us can do to make a difference in a hungry child’s life; just donate to your local food bank, it’s as easy as a click of a button.”

This year's donation from NorthStar Moving Company comes at a critical time for food-insecure families with children who struggle to fill the summer meal gap when school meals are not available," said Michael Flood, President and CEO of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

More than 1 million people in Los Angeles County are food insecure, including 1 in 6 children. To make matters worse, children who typically receive reduced-cost or free breakfast 7 lunch can't count on those meals during the summer. Low-income families rely on food banks to help replace those meals, and that's why the Let's Send Hunger Packing Food Drive is so important.

Since joining our network in 2010, NorthStar Moving Company has delivered nearly 50,000 lbs. of food to California food banks -- that's the equivalent of 41,400 meals. Thank you to Laura McHolm and the entire NorthStar Moving team for your continued support!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
