Moving: Where to Start When You Don’t Know Where to Start«« Move For Hunger Resources October 4, 2016 | 10:34 am |
If you’re clueless like me, your first question after deciding to move into a new house/apartment is “where do I even start?!” Thankfully, I have done some of the work for you, because moving is already stressful enough. Here are three tips and tricks to keep in mind BEFORE you tackle the move:
Get rid of what you don’t need
This may come as a surprise to some of you, but you don’t actually NEED 35 pairs of shoes. And if you think about it, you tend to gravitate towards certain pairs, so some shoes you wear all of the time, and others you haven’t worn in a year. Not only will selling the shoes you don’t wear get you some extra cash for your move, but you won’t have to pack as much of your things up when it’s crunch time!
Make a list
Compartmentalize your house and take inventory of the items you want to take with you. This way you can label moving boxes accordingly and make sure that everything is going with you.
Speaking of boxes…
Ask EVERYONE YOU KNOW (local businesses, friends, family, church members) to be on high alert for boxes! There is no reason that you should have to spend any money whatsoever on boxes. Period. There are plenty of resources out there, and your friends and family are powerful resources, so use them!
Use your luggage
If your family and friends were able to get you most of the boxes you needed, great! But sometimes we realize that there are last-minute or unexpected things that we left out or forgot. No problem! If you have luggage collecting dust in the back of your closet, use them! Stuff some of your clothes or silverware in them, zip up your bags, and take them to go!
This is a super easy way to stay organized and keep track of your inventory–AT THE SAME TIME. Amazing, right? And better yet, the resources are in your own home! Do your kids have colored markers and stickers everywhere? Use them! Every time you look at the box with the penguin and puppy stickers on them, you’ll know that that box could only be the kitchen utensils box.
