May 2019 Mover of the Month: Berger Allied of St. Paul

June 19, 2019

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Berger Allied of St. Paul has been named our Mover of the Month for May 2019!

Forty-five moving companies in our network volunteered to assist with this year's Stamp Out Hunger food drive, but few made as big an impact as Berger Allied of St. Paul, MN.

Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest one-day food collection effort. Residents in thousands of communities across the United States were asked to leave bags of non-perishable food donations on their porch or near their mailbox. Postal workers then collected the donations as they delivered mail along their route.

Getting the donations to the food banks always presents a challenge, and that’s where moving companies, like Berger Allied, can really make a difference! Their crew volunteered to pick up all of the food from 4 local collection points, which eased some of the the burden on the post offices and food banks.

In just one day, Berger Allied delivered 58,246 lbs. of food to Second Harvest Heartland -- that's the equivalent of 48,500 meals.

When we asked Kevin Dunleavy, Berger Allied's General Manager, why he felt it was important to give back to the community, his answer was simple.

"Because we are a part of it."

Berger Allied joined the Move For Hunger network back in 2012, and for the last 7 years they have been asking all of their customers to donate their food when they move. Dunleavy said that being a member of Move For Hunger has had an positive impact on their staff, in addition to being an easy way to help their neighbors in need.

"The reception from our employees has been great."

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive always help to restock the shelves at food banks before the summer, which tends to be the season when emergency food providers see the greatest demand for their services. The reason? Families with children who had been receiving free or reduced-cost breakfast and/or lunch at school need to find a way to replace those meals during summer break. So they turn to their local food bank or pantry for assistance.

Dunleavy said that the food bank was "very appreciative" that Berger Allied was able to provide so much assistance on what was certainly a busy day. And so are we!

More than 504,000 people in Minnesota are facing hunger, including 1 in 8 children. Thank you to Kevin Dunleavy and everyone at Berger Allied for making time to make a difference!

In addition to the award, Berger Allied of St. Paul will also be receiving Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet. Congratulations to Berger Allied of St. Paul on this much-deserved recognition! Thank you for helping us reduce food waste and fight hunger in the Twin Cities!
