Maffucci Moving & Storage Has Delivered 10,000 Meals

September 30, 2019

AMITYVILLE, NY – Maffucci Moving & Storage, a Bekins Van Lines agent, has been recognized by Move For Hunger, a national non-profit organization, for delivering 13,000 pounds of food – enough to provide more than 10,000 meals – to Long Island Cares.

People tend to throw a lot of “stuff” away when they move, including perfectly good food. As part of Move For Hunger’s national network of relocation professionals, Maffucci Moving & Storage provides their customers with the opportunity to donate unopened, non-perishable food during the moving process and volunteers to deliver the donations to the food bank, free of charge. Maffucci Moving and Storage has also been making bi-weekly trips to deliver donations from Long Island Cares to the South Shore Service Center, a food pantry in Lindenhurst.

“More than 155,000 people on Long Island are food insecure, including 1 in 8 children,” said Adam Lowy, Executive Director of Move For Hunger. “Maffucci Moving & Storage is working every day to help feed people in the communities they serve. We are so grateful for their support.”

“We are proud to support Move for Hunger in their fight to end hunger in our community,” said Judd Levine of Maffucci Moving & Storage. “Thank you to all of our clients, employees, and friends for helping us provide 10,000 desperately-needed meals to people in our area over the last 6 months.”

More than 40 million Americans face hunger each day. Meanwhile, 40% of the food in the United States each year is wasted. Through the support of partners like Maffucci Moving & Storage, Move For Hunger can continue to reduce food waste and fight hunger nationwide.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
