Lowy's Moving Service Rescues 2,500 LBS. of Food from New Jersey Marathon

May 8, 2018

For the third year in a row, Lowy's Moving Service, a Wheaton agent, volunteered to rescue any leftover food and beverages from the New Jersey Marathon.

Approximately 40% of the food in the United States is wasted. You'd probably guess that most of our food is being wasted on the farm, at the grocery store, in restaurants, and in our homes. But did you ever stop to consider how much food is simply thrown into the trash at conferences, weddings, and sporting events?

Through our work with Team Move For Hunger, we saw first-hand just how much perfectly food was going to waste at the thousands of marathons, half-marathons, and 5Ks that take place in communities all across the country - and we decided to take action.

This year, the Lowy's crew rescued 2,500 lbs. of food from the NJ Marathon, which brings their 3-year total at the race to 15,550 lbs. - all of which has been delivered to Fulfill (formerly known as The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties).

Since 2014, members of our network have recovered 706,500 lbs. of snacks, fruit, sports drinks, and water from 64 races nationwide. Thank you to Lowy's and all of the moving companies who have helped us save so much food over the past 4 years.
