June 2018 Mover of the Month: Royal Hawaiian Movers of Oahu

July 19, 2018

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Royal Hawaiian Movers of Oahu has been named our Mover of the Month for June 2018!

For the past 5 years, Royal Hawaiian Movers of Oahu have worked tirelessly to help fight hunger in the Honolulu area. Although most of us are familiar with Hawaii as a vacationers paradise, the truth is that hunger is just a present here as it is in the continental U.S. More than 112,000 people are food insecure on Oahu alone, including 1 in 6 children. And, as Mills Matsuoka, Moving Consultant at Royal Hawaiian Movers, notes, the number of people experiencing homelessness on the island has been rising.

"I am seeing the homeless epidemic up front on a daily basis," he said. "Hawaii is the most expensive state, per capita, to live in. Homelessness is huge here and will be an ongoing problem."

By taking the simple action of asking residents to donate non-perishable food items when they move, Royal Hawaiian Movers of Oahu have been able to continuously provide meals for their neighbors in need.

"Asking our customers to donate their food when they move helps provide meals to local families and allows them to pay their bills and other important day-to-day expenses," Matsuoka said.

In June alone, Royal Hawaiian Movers of Oahu delivered 2,200 pounds of food to the Hawaii Foodbank-- that's the equivalent of 1,830 meals!

"The Hawaii Food Bank does an awesome job here on Oahu," Matsuoka said. "They help thousands of families get back on their feet and survive the tough economy."

Dedicated members like Royal Hawaiian Movers of Oahu are so important to our nationwide fight against hunger. Since joining our network in 2013, their crew has delivered more than 27,500 pounds of food, which is enough to provide nearly 23,000 meals!

When asked why it was so important to give back to the communities they serve, Matsuoka said it was simple.

"It’s just important in general to give back because we have plenty to give," he said. "There are so many people and families out there that are less fortunate."

In addition to the award, Royal Hawaiian Movers of Oahu will also be receiving a Move For Hunger hand truck, courtesy of Victory Packaging and Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet.

Congratulations to Royal Hawaiian Movers of Oahu on this much-deserved recognition. Thank you for commitment to reducing food waste and fighting hunger in the Aloha State!
