July 2017 Mover of the Month: Gentle Giant Moving Company of New York

August 15, 2017

Each month, we highlight one of the moving companies in our network for their extraordinary commitment to fighting hunger in their community. We are excited to announce that Gentle Giant Moving Company of New York is our Mover of the Month for July 2017!

Our network is dedicated to reducing food waste and fighting hunger. In addition to rescuing food during moves and helping with food drives, we also encourage our movers to recover unused non-perishables from big events, like marathons and other endurance competitions. Last month, Gentle Giant of New York did just that.

The New York City Triathlon is a physically-demanding athletic competition, to say the least. The event begins with a 1,500-meter swim along the Hudson River, followed by a 40k cycling course, and concludes with a 10k run through Central Park. By the time it’s all over, the athletes are spent and need to refuel.

Boxes upon boxes of bananas, energy bars, sports drinks, and water were available at the finish line to help replenish the exhausted participants. Despite the thousands of depleted athletes in desperate need of calories and hydration, a lot of food/beverages went unused.

Thankfully, Gentle Giant came to the rescue for the second year in a row and ensured that nothing went to waste. On July 16, their crew recovered and delivered nearly 11,500 lbs. of food to City Harvest Food Bank in Long Island City.

There are 1.4 million people in New York City who are facing hunger each and every day. One in 4 children in the five boroughs goes to bed hungry every night. According to City Harvest, "The economy may have improved these last several years, but New York’s poverty and unemployment rates remain high.  For many, income hasn’t kept up with the rising cost of living: 42% of New York City households – 2.7 million men, women, and children – lack the income needed to cover basic necessities like food, housing, transportation, and childcare."

Meanwhile, 40% of the food produced in the United States each year is wasted.  City Harvest will collect and distribute 55 million pounds of excess food in New York this year, alone! It’s hard to believe that, in a country where more than 42 million people face hunger each day, so much food could end up in a landfill. Yet, this is precisely what is happening, and that is why food rescues like this are so important.

Since joining the Move For Hunger network almost 2 years ago, Gentle Giant of New York has delivered more than 15,000 pounds of food to food banks/pantries in the City. That's the equivalent of nearly 13,000 meals. There's a lot more work to be done, but we're so grateful to be working with partners like Gentle Giant of New York who are doing what they can to be part of the solution.

Along with the award, Gentle Giant Moving Company of New York will also be receiving a Move For Hunger hand truck, courtesy of Victory Packaging, lunch for their entire staff, compliments of Montway Auto Transport, and Move For Hunger truck decals for their entire fleet.

Congratulations to Gentle Giant Moving Company of New York on this much-deserved recognition. Thank you for commitment to reducing food waste and fighting hunger in the Big Apple!
