Glean Giants: Philadelphia Moving Company Saves 8,000 Pounds of CornAugust 9, 2016 | 1:46 pm |
Gentle Giant Moving Company of Philadelphia spent this past weekend fighting hunger. Through their efforts, over 8,000 pounds of fresh corn was gleaned from South Jersey farms and donated to Philabundance to be distributed to those in need!
Gleaning is the practice of collecting excess food and donating it to the hungry. Sometimes farmers are left with more crops than they can sell. In these circumstances, it often costs more money to harvest and transport the produce than the farmer would make selling it. Farmers are better off leaving perfectly good food to rot in the fields. Some generous farmers allow gleaning organizations and volunteers to harvest this food and deliver it to organizations such as
Philabundance before it goes to waste.
In addition to generously donating their time and resources in the gleaning event, Gentle Giant of Philadelphia recently held a food drive at the Tilden Street Block Party, which yielded an additional 111 pounds of food for Philabundance. They also plan to utilize their moving trucks to collect and donate leftover food and beverages from the upcoming Rock ’N’ Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon.
We would like to extend a huge “Thank You” to Gentle Giant Moving Company of Philadelphia for all the hard work they continue to put in to alleviating hunger in their community!
