Gentle Giant Rescues 2,600+ LBS. of Food At The Seattle MarathonDecember 6, 2018 | 3:05 pm |
If you have ever participated in a race or walk, chances are you were handed a granola bar, a piece of fruit, or bottle of water at the end of the race. Recovery is a very important part to exercise, so race organizers stock up on these healthy treats for runners and walkers to refuel. The bad news is that they typically order too much, which results in a lot of perfectly good food getting thrown out. Fortunately, our network of movers here at Move For Hunger are stopping food waste right at the finish line.
With the help of Golden Services, there have been successful food pick ups at the Seattle Marathon for the past 3 races. This year, Gentle Giant Moving Company took on the challenge to rescue the uneaten food. We are so thankful that they did, because they saved 2,650 pounds of it! When combined with the past three years, Golden Services and Gentle Giant have collected 11,500 pounds of food from the Seattle Marathon! Thats enough to provide nearly 9,600 meals for families in need.
By the end of the day, Gentle Giant delivered the food to Rainier Valley Food Bank. This food rescue will help change the lives of the 254,200 people, including 1 in 7 children, in King County who are food insecure. Thanks so much to the Gentle Giant team for taking the time out of their day to tackle food waste and give back to their community. We hope to keep up this tradition and return to the Seattle Marathon for a 5th year!
