Gannett Publishing Helps Collect Nearly 3,000 LBS. of Food During Hunger Action Month

October 3, 2017

We believe the fight to end hunger begins at home. There are people struggling with food insecurity in every community in the United States, and the Jersey Shore is no exception. More than 114,000 people in Monmouth and Ocean Counties face hunger each day, including 1 in 7 children. That's why we partnered with Gannett Publishing, Lowy's Moving Service, a Wheaton agent, and The Moving Guys to hold two Fill-A-Truck food drives during Hunger Action Month.

On September 16, Lowy's Moving Service parked one of their moving trucks outside of the Shop-Rite in Neptune; The Moving Guys sent a truck and a crew to the Shop-Rite in Bayville. Members of our staff, Gannett employees, and a few amazing volunteers were stationed at the entrances of each store. The mission was simple: encourage shoppers to donate enough non-perishable food to fill both trucks!

In just a few hours, we were able to collect more than 1,700 pounds of non-perishable food -- that's enough to provide 1,400 meals

All of the donations were delivered to two local food pantries: Trinity Episcopal Church Food Pantry in Asbury Park and The Peoples Pantry in Toms River.

Thank you to Gannett, Lowy's Moving Service, The Moving Guys, Shop-Rite, and our volunteers for helping us make a difference during Hunger Action Month!

Everyone deserves to enjoy a holiday meal with their family and friends. Hold a Thanksgiving food drive in your community.
