Food Drive Tips | Make a SPLASH This Summer

June 19, 2017

Hooray! It's finally summer! The thought of sunny skies, perfect waves, and a care-free schedule are what keep many people motivated throughout the winter months.

While Summer is the favorite season of most people who live within a 50-mile radius of the nearest beach, it is also a time that many people who are food insecure fear the most. As the school year comes to a close, parents who rely on free or reduced-price school meals for their children, face the struggle of providing enough food for their family. The summer is also a time when food banks and pantries receive the least amount of donations.

With all of this is mind, now is the perfect time to give back to your community while also providing a chance for people to have fun in the sun! Below are some "summer-themed" food drives to consider.

Fill-A-Pool: Blow-up pools not only provide an easy fix for heat exhaustion on a hot day, but they also provide a perfect vessel for storing non-perishable items. Scout out a location that is sure to be filled with people, such as the beach or a local park, and set up a blow-up pool and challenge the community to fill the pool!

Hunger Doesn't Take a Vacation: For this drive, challenge volunteers to dress up in their funniest summer looks; the more Hawaiian shirts the better! By designating a theme, you create a fun challenge and show that food drives do not have to be boring! This theme also helps to bring awareness to the fact that hunger is an ever-present issue and indeed does not take a vacation.

Christmas in July: Since most food drives tend to be held during the holiday season, why not bring the holidays to summertime? Not only will this themed drive give people a chance to break out their Santa hats, but it also reinforces the importance of giving back! The options are endless with this theme, so run with it and have some fun!
