Crown Relocations of Houston Rescues 13,000+ LBS. of Food from IRONMAN TriathlonJune 6, 2017 | 2:37 pm |
Crown Relocations of Houston took action in the fight against hunger on April 22 as some of the employees volunteered at the Memorial Hermann Hospital’s 2017 IRONMAN North American Championship, the world’s most prestigious triathlon. However, the Crown Relocations team’s prominent contribution took place after the event.
The race consisted of a 2.4 mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and 26.22-mile run, totaling 140.6 miles. The team volunteered at the water station on the running course by passing out Gatorade, water, and snacks to the participants. They were also there to help out with anything the athletes needed. In addition, the volunteers dressed as doctors and nurses to coincide with the event’s “Thirst Aid” theme.
When Qiana Jones, Crown Relocations Manager, organized for her employees to volunteer at the IRONMAN event, she asked what happened to all the leftover water, Gatorade, and snacks. Despite efforts to get the food sent home with athletes and volunteers, Jones discovered that the majority of the items get thrown way. She decided that it would be a good idea for Crown Relocations to haul any unused food/beverages to the Houston Food Bank. Jones turned this idea into reality as the team rescued nearly 13,300 pounds of non-perishables!
“My contact I’d been dealing with at IRONMAN was elated, because they’d always wanted to donate, but never had the extra time to get everything hauled there,” Jones explained. “I organized the pickup and everything went perfectly! In fact, we will now be doing this every year!”
According to The Guardian, new research suggests that half of all U.S. food produce is thrown away. In other words, Americans throw away almost as much food as they eat, deepening hunger and poverty. Food rescue efforts like this can make a huge impact in the fight against hunger.
More than 4.3 million people in Texas battle food insecurity every day. Thank you to Qiana and every at Crown Relocations for helping to fight hunger in your community!
