Apex Moving + Storage Helps Local Elementary Schools Collect 7,000 LBS. of Food

December 4, 2017

We love it when members of our network expand their efforts and begin building hunger-fighting coalitions within their communities. Some have partnered with nearby real estate offices. Others have built strong relationships with their neighborhood food banks. Some of the most meaningful connections, however, have occured when our movers have collaborated with local schools. In addition to being a great way to teach children about the importance of giving back, school food drives also tend to bring in tons of donations.

Apex Moving + Storage, an Atlas Van Lines agent based in Antioch, TN, recently partnered with two schools, Brown's Chapel Elementary and LaVergne Primary School, to hold a Thanksgiving food drive from November 6-17. Each school held a competition between classrooms to inspire students to bring in donations. The classes that collected the most food received rewards, including gift cards and a pizza party.

Needless to say, the incentives worked: the two schools collected 7,000 lbs. of food combined, which is enough to provide 5,800 meals.

"We were so happy with the results," said Angie Hane of Apex Moving + Storage. "The schools got really involved. I was told one parent brought in more than 400 cans and that some parents were ordering canned goods from Amazon and having them sent to the school. We are just super excited about the outcome."

Apex Moving + Storage delivered the donations they received from LaVergne Primary School to Lavergne First Methodist Church. Donations from Brown's Chapel Elementary were delivered to the Nourish Food Bank.

Nearly 380,000 people in middle Tennessee are food insecure, including 1 in 5 children. Numbers like that are a sobering reminder that the fight to end hunger is an intergenerational battle. Thank you to crew at Apex Moving + Storage for working to keep the shelves stocked at your local food banks and for helping to foster an anti-hunger consciousness among the children in your community.

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
