Amazing Moves Moving & Storage Rescues 11,000+ LBS. of Food From Rock 'n' Roll Denver Half Marathon

October 25, 2018

About 40% of all food grown, processed and transported in the United States will go to waste this year. It's incredibly unfortunate that so much will go uneaten, especially when 41 million Americans are struggling with food insecurity. However, there is good news: according to The National Resource Defense Council, if we were able to rescue just 15% of the food we waste each year, we’d save enough to feed more than half of those who are hungry.

RNRDenver2018_Foodpickup_AmazingMoves (6).jpgWhile our race team, Team Move For Hunger participated in 5Ks, marathons and more, we began to notice that a lot of food waste was occurring at the finish line. Runners and walkers are almost always given fruit, a granola bar, or a bottle of water when they finish the race, however, race organizers typically order too much of these snacks. This, unfortunately, results in a lot of perfectly good food getting thrown out. Though food waste occurs at many different venues, rescuing this extra food at road races is a great way to fight it. That's where our network of dedicated movers comes in.

On October 21, Amazing Moves Moving & Storage attended the Rock 'n' Roll Denver Half Marathon to make their first ever food rescue. It's safe to say it was a smash hit, as they picked up an incredible 11,732 pounds of food and beverages! The Amazing Moves team then delivered the food to the Food Bank of the Rockies, providing up to 9,776 meals for families in need.

With more than 627,000 people in Colorado who are food insecure, including 1 in 7 children, the efforts of Amazing Moves Moving & Storage's food rescue last weekend will make a difference in so many lives. Thanks so much for all of your hard work and for volunteering your time to help those in need!
