Hall Lane Moving and Storage Collects 1,000 LBS. of Food For Puerto Rico

October 24, 2017

Hall Lane Moving and Storage, based in Commack, NY, wanted to do something for the people who were affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. The movers help out with the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach every year. More than 80,000 people attend the annual event, and Hall Lane Moving and Storage recognized that this would be a great place to collect donations for the victims of the devastating storm.

Hall Lane Moving and Storage set up a truck at the walk and their goal was to fill the trailer with non-perishable food and toiletries. They also had collection boxes set up at different stands, including the Girl Scouts of Nassau, Signature Premier Properties, and Coldwell Banker Residential.

Hall Lane Moving and Storage managed to collect more than 1,000 pounds of food - enough to provide 830 meals. The food was delivered to Long Island Cares and all of the food collected will eventually be distributed to Puerto Rico to help the hurricane victims. What a great way to get community members together and step up to help those in need!

Inflation & food insecurity are on the rise

Cuts to SNAP benefits and inflation have had a devastating economic impact and filled the lines at food banks and pantries across the country. More than 47 million Americans including 1 in 5 children are struggling with food insecurity and do not know where their next meal is coming from.

For people of color and other minorities, the situation is even worse. Hunger disproportionately affects the Black population, the Latinx community, LGBTQ+ individuals, and more.

USDA TERMINATES FOOD SECURITY REPORT

September 22: The USDA announced termination of future Household Food Security Reports USDA, which had tracked hunger nationwide for nearly 30 years. The most recent data revealed that one in seven households — 47.4 million people, including 13.8 million children — were food insecure. For more than three decades, the report was been the gold standard for measuring whether a household lacks consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. “Eliminating data collection strips away the evidence that proves these programs work, where investment is needed, and who is being left out,” Crystal FitzSimons, president, Food Research & Action Center said in a statement.
