Gentle Giant Moving Rescues Nearly Six Tons of Food/Beverages From NYC Triathlon

July 20, 2017

Each year, thousands of athletes take their marks at the starting line of the New York City Triathlon.  A 1,500-meter swim along the Hudson River kicks off the event, followed by a 40k cycling course, and finally a 10k run through Central Park. Thus, it's no surprise that by the time the athletes cross the finish line they are eager to refuel their bodies.

Boxes of energy bars, pretzels, bananas, and water bottles were provided at the finish line in order to replenish the exhausted athletes. While lots of the food items were put to good use, a large amount was left unused at the end of the event. Thankfully, Gentle Giant Moving Company of New York came to the rescue for the second year in a row and ensured that nothing went to waste. The crew proudly delivered nearly 11,500 lbs. of food to City Harvest Food Bank in Long Island City.

Gentle Giant has proven time and time again that they stand with us in our fight against hunger. Last month, Gentle Giant's team Seattle rescued 27,000 pounds of food and beverages from the Rock ‘N’ Roll Seattle Marathon, Half-Marathon, and 5K. In March, Gentle Giant’s crew in Washington, D.C. recovered nearly 21,000 pounds of food/beverages from the Rock ‘n’ Roll D.C. Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, and 5K and delivered it to the Capital Area Food Bank.

Since 2016, Gentle Giant Moving Company’s branches have rescued more than 100,000 pounds of food/drinks from races all across the country.

The Gentle Giant team is doing an amazing job, but with 42 million Americans facing hunger each day, we need more help! Contact Raquel today to inquire about race picks ups in your area or to discuss other food rescue opportunities in your community.
