A-1 First Class Moving & Storage Rescues Nearly 10 Tons of Food/Beverages

October 19, 2017

For the third year in a row, A-1 First Class Moving & Storage, an Atlas Van Lines agent, volunteered to rescue leftover food and beverages from the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half-Marathon in Brooklyn, NY.

After a grueling 13.1-mile race, runners need to refuel and the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series always has plenty of snacks, water, and sports drinks waiting for the athletes when they cross the finish line. There is always more than the competitors could possibly consume, however. So what happens to everything that gets left behind?

A-1 First-Class Moving & Storage made sure that nothing got left behind. Their crew loaded all of the unused food/beverages -- more than 19,000 lbs. -- onto their truck and delivered it all to City Harvest, which distributes food to 500 soup kitchens, food pantries, and other community food programs in the five boroughs.

Nearly 1.3 million people, including 1 in 4 children, in New York City face hunger every year, according to City Harvest. Meanwhile, 40% of the food produced in the United States each year is lost or wasted. Over the past 3 years, A-1 First Class Moving & Storage has rescued 40,000 lbs. of food/beverages from the Rock 'n' Roll Half-Marathons, alone. Thank you to everyone at A-1 First Class Moving & Storage for being committed to reducing food waste and fight hunger in New York City!
